Is the ritual of safety moment at the start of every meeting impactful, engaging, behavioural changing?
Yes
How are safety tips delivered in the corporate environment?
Generally, the safety tips have been delivered via internal notification/newsletter/alerts, committees/meetings and training.
How are safety tips delivered in an operational environment?
Generally, the safety tips have been delivered via onsite training, including skill-up training, demonstration, on the job training, inspection, stand-down/up. Safety moment/tip are commonly provided by health and safety personnel, but it's a simple way to give an insight, remind, share and learn from each other, so every one (not limited to health and safety personnel) can initiate. I have observed that there's still a prejudice, health and safety is health and safety person/team's duty, even a simple safety moment/tip. We need to continuously collaborate and engage together to finally achieve that everyone owns the health and safety.
Have you heard a safety tip that made you cringe? What was it, and why did you cringe? *
1. When I presented a safety moment, but if there was no reaction from the audience. It will not make me cringe, but I may feel that my safety moment is not impactful, or the audience are not interested to the safety moment.
2. I observed a case that a person who was facilitator for a meeting with client and he didn't prepare safety moment. One of client asked any safety moment before kicking-off the meeting, and it looked that he was embarrassed. I suggested him just to share any safety tips that he experienced or learning from his scope of work, or any other safety related information which may be helpful (e.g. safety moment related with heavy rain such as driving, clothing, etc. - if that's related to the season).
What's the best safety tip you observed and why?
I would say that one of safety moment regarding Hazard Identification which was consisted with not only providing information to audience but also, creating a chance let them to physically engage together to find potential hazards in the place with few quiz and small incentives. Even it was a short safety tip, but by engaging with audience and encouraging them to implement by themselves, it could lead them to more easily understand and adopt it to their daily life at the workplace. Also, by providing a small gift to the participants of the quiz and repeating this approach in various safety training/meeting, etc., it could be a way to encourage people to more actively join in any of H&S program.
Your personal view. Is it time to ditch safety moments in the corporte setting?
No.
Your top three tips for delivering an impactful and engaging safety moment/tip.
1. A safety moment/tip with quiz to let audience to physically engage in the session or let audience to directly participate in a demonstration to indirectly experience the relevant safety topic. This could lead them to easily understand the message of safety moment/tip and adopt them into their daily work life.
2. A safety moment/tip from the person who experienced the incident associated with the topic. He/she could directly deliver to their co-workers how the incident gave an impact to him/her and how the safety tips associated with the topic are important.
3. A safety moment/tip from the family could also an impactful way to emotionally approach to employees. One of example was every lunch time, company has turned on music, and this program was always started with a safety tips (key safety measures for high-risk job) recorded by few employee's family (particularly, their children) voice.
