Director Strategic Safety | Office of the Director-General, Major Transport Infrastructure Authority (MTIA)
Anne’s career in safety started as a Department of Labour (WorkSafe) Inspector more than 30 years ago. Her appointment created a change of engagement policy to the mandate that inspectors were to have a trade background. Given that the trade of most females in this era was hairdressing, this mandate basically precluded females. One of the first female inspectors for the construction sector, Anne’s learnings in the male-dominated industry provided a real opportunity for safety career development.
Fast forward to 2019, Anne now provides strategic safety support to the Director–General who has responsibility, on behalf of the Victorian Government, to deliver the Major Transport Infrastructure Program (five projects worth almost $60 billion). Anne works closely with other ‘safety champions’ not only within the Major Transport Infrastructure Authority, but from the many construction partners and stakeholders that play a part in the delivery of this unprecedented program of works. Opportunities to network and collaborate improve safety performance, enhance safety professionals’ skills and capabilities, and enable the ability to influence permanent changes within the construction industry.
Anne’s favourite message to communicate is “You are an individual, not special because of your gender, so just do your job to the best of your ability and the results will speak for themselves.”
Anne’s top three tips to share with future safety champions are:
1. Never underestimate the benefit of fixing the small safety issues, workers will appreciate your effort, and potentially be more understanding and patient when bigger issues take more time to resolve than they would like.
2. Tell it like it is – no sugar coating, nor cover up – just stick to the facts as you know them.
3. Be flexible, firm and committed to the non-negotiable aspects of your role and responsibilities. This position may not always be popular, but you will always be respected for your conviction.
