ROB KOVACS

HSR | Victoria Police

Rob’s approach is to be an advocate for front-line workers and provide management with solutions from an informed perspective. Utilising research, current best practice information, education, professional networks in the field of OHS and effective communication strategies, Rob strives to minimise the gap between work as imagined and work as performed, to create safer solutions for workers, employers and the community.

Working with a local hospital, Rob enabled the inclusion of a Behavioural Assessment Room in the design of their new Emergency Department. The room is designed for the use of violent and potentially violent patients that are brought to the hospital by police and ambulance. Patients are assessed and controlled in the purpose-built room, away from other patients and equipment. Research concludes the use of this system reduces the stress and risk of injury to the medical teams, ambulance, police, security and the patient.

During the Hazelwood Mine Fire in 2014, the divisional headquarters building was only 400 meters from the burning mine. Rob worked with management to put in place health monitoring programs and ensured environmental systems were in place to keep workers in a safe and habitable building.
